Abstract
This study aims to examine tactile communication styles of Korean mothers and identify effects of tactile communication on mother-infant interactions depending on the degree of postnatal depression of mothers. Subjects were selected from mother-child pairs who visited obstetrics and gynecology departments of three general hospitals in Seoul six to eight months after child birth. The children were checked for developmental state and mothers were examined in terms of postnatal depression by the EPDS, parenting stress by the K-PSI, depression by the CES-D, satisfaction with life by the SWLS, and satisfaction with marital life by the K-MSI. Among the mothers and their children, 30 mother-infant pairs were randomly selected from mothers with a higher degree of postnatal depression, and other 60 mother-infant pairs were randomly selected from mothers who had no significant problems. The findings are: (1) significant differences were found in all measures between the group of mothers with a higher level of postnatal depression and the normal group; (2) significant variables were found for each measure between the two groups; (3) it was possible to classify the mothers based on the characteristics of their tactile communication, which had a high correlation with the degree of postnatal depression. Interactions between six- to eight-month-old infants and their mothers showed four styles of physical touch,
which had a significant relationship with the degree of postnatal depression of the mothers. In particular, the degree of postnatal depression had a significant relationship with the function and characteristics of mothers¡¯ touch on their children.
